Scuderia Ferrari ended on top of a practice timesheet for the first time this season, although in truth it is rather a false dawn given the rain that lashed the Hungaroring circuit on Friday afternoon.
Sebastian Vettel delivered the goods in FP2 ith the fastest overall time, just over a quarter of a second clear of current championship leader Valtteri Bottas’ Mercedes-AMG.
With few laps posted as the teams opted not to risk too much mileage of potential damage, Vettel and Bottas were comfortably clear of McLaren’s Carlos Sainz Jr., who finished the session third-fastest ahead of the two Racing Points of Lance Stroll and Sergio Pérez.
Sixth-fastest was AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly, who set about trying to make up for lost time after failing to get out of the pit lane in FP1. The Frenchman managed a total of seven laps in the session before returning to the pits complaining of a burning smell in his Honda-powered AT01.
Only thirteen drivers posted a lap time during the 90-minute session. The likes of FP1 pacesetter Lewis Hamilton opted not to do any more than a single installation lap before returning to the pits, which was a similar strategy undertaken by the likes of Daniel Ricciardo, Esteban Ocon and Alexander Albon.
