Townsville will become the third venue to host back-to-back rounds of the Supercars Championship in 2020.
Having played host to the Townsville 400 since 2009, the Red Park street circuit will stage two SuperSprint rounds over consecutive weekends with an additional pair of races planned for the weekend of September 5-6. This mirrors last month’s hastily-added double-header at Sydney Motorsport Park and the upcoming pair of rounds at Darwin’s Hidden Valley Raceway.
“We’d like to thank the Queensland Government and Townsville City Council for supporting this concept which allows Supercars to race at one of our favourite circuits on back-to-back weekends,” Supercars CEO Sean Seamer said.
“Two weeks of racing in Townsville allows us to maximise exposure and competition during the key northern leg of this year’s championship.”
The field is scheduled to cross the border into Victoria later in September for the Sandown 400, however with greater Melbourne overwhelmed by a surge of new COVID-19 Coronavirus cases it is almost certain that the event will be postponed or cancelled.
Queensland Raceway is under consideration to be reinstated to the 2020 calendar to keep the series in Queensland, which currently has a negligible number of active cases, however Motorsport Australia will only grant the circuit permission to stage a round of the championship if it undertakes a number of safety upgrades.
