Garry Rogers Motorsport has been granted a wildcard entry for this year’s season-ending Bathurst 1000 endurance classic, however, the former full-time team’s application for co-driver Nathan Herne has been rejected by Motorsport Australia as the youngster does not possess the requisite Superlicense.
The team, which raced full-time in the category until forced out of the series when it could not secure sponsorship to compete in 2020, has indicated its intention to appeal the decision and will likely rescind its entry if rejected.
Of the 24 full-time entries, just four driver pairings are the same as last year’s event – both Triple Eight Race Engineering combinations (Jamie Whincuop / Craig Lowndes and Shane van Gisbergen / Gath Tander), the #15 Kelly Racing (Rick Kelly / Dale Wood) and the #12 DJR Team Penske (Fabian Coulthard / Tony D’Alberto) entries.
Another contributing reason to the wealth of co-driver changes has been the COVID-19 pandemic which has left several overseas-based co-drivers unable to enter Australia.
Long-time co-driver and defending Bathurst 1000 winner Alexandre Prémat was meant to drive for Tickford Racing this year, but now finds himself stranded in the United States.
This year’s Bathurst 1000, the season finale for the 2020 championship, will take place on October 15-18.
