Biography

A successful motorcycle racer, Bob Anderson’s two-wheeled exploits were cut short by a back injury.  He switched to car racing at the relatively late age of 29, signing with Team Lotus a year later in 1962 to race in Formula Junior.  His biggest achievement was a podium finish, behind Peter Arundell and Mike Spence, at the Monaco Grand Prix support race.

In 1963 he opted to have a crack at Formula 1, buying the Bowmaker Lola Mk4 Climax formerly run by Reg Parnell, to contest a mix of World Championship and non-championship Grands Prix.  Third place at the Imola Grand Prix preceded a win at the Rome Grand Prix, admittedly against a rather thin field of mostly local drivers.

He stepped up to full-time World Championship competition in 1964 as one of a number of privateers against the mighty works teams.  This time armed with a Brabham BT11, he frequently outclassed many of his better-equipped and funded rivals.  A podium finish came at the Austrian Grand Prix (pictured above), a rather lucky result given Anderson was one of the few drivers whose car didn’t get shaken to pieces on the ultra-bumpy Zeltweg airfield circuit.

Awarded the Wolfgang von Trips Trophy as the best privateer of 1964, the indomitable Anderson – with the support of his French wife Marie-Edmée – ploughed on, juggling the roles of driver, mechanic, team manager and public relations.  His 1965 campaign was cut short when he wrote his car off in a practice accident at the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

In 1966 he made a brief return to motorcycle racing, helping Yamaha sort its RD05 250cc and claiming a fine fifth place in the rain at Assen.  Back in Formula 1, Anderson was on course for a fifth-place finish at the French Grand Prix until his transmission failed a few laps from home.  Sixth place at the end of his season at the Italian Grand Prix saw him match John Surtees’ feat of scoring points in both the FIM motorcycle and FIA F1 championships in the same year.

He opened his 1967 campaign with fifth place at the South African Grand Prix, but with Ford Cosworth emerging as the powerplant of choice it was becoming increasingly obvious that the days of privateer runners were numbered.

Testing his car at a wet Silverstone Circuit in preparation for the Canadian Grand Prix that would follow, Anderson aquaplaned off the track and slammed into a marshal’s post.  He succumbed to his chest and neck injuries four hours later in Northampton Hospital.
