Born Johan Gerard Hayje, the Amsterdam-born racer started out in saloon cars and also won the Dutch Formula Ford championship crown.
He later competed in Formula 5000 in 1975 – achieving little in the way of results – in an ex-James Hunt March 731, before he dropped back to Formula 3 in 1976.
It was in this year that he made his Grand Prix debut at Zandvoort, a one-off appearance in a rented Penske with the support of his backers, F&S Properties.
Despite his promising debut, no more drives were in the pipeline until 1977, when he and F&S moved to RAM Racing, piloting the team’s March 761. It was a disaster for all concerned and he qualified just twice in seven outings, retiring from the South African Grand Prix and finishing outside classification at the Belgian Grand Prix.
After he failed to qualify for his home race, the Dutchman departed the team and took his backing into Formula 2, again achieving little success over the next two years.
He switched to the European Renault 5 Championship where success finally came his way, before crossing the Atlantic in 1983 to contest some IMSA races. He placed third with Roberto Moreno (winning the GTU class) in a BMW 320i at Riverside and won outright at Laguna Seca. That earned him some outings in Dan Gurney’s AAR Toyota Celicas and a hit-out in a BMW M1 Procar at Portland.
In 1984, he raced a Lola T616 Mazda prototype on both sides of the Atlantic before hanging up his helmet to run the family’s 4×4 garage in Belgium.
